Culinary Arts
The National Restaurant Association’s ProStart® educational program consists of a sequence of courses that provides students the opportunity to learn rigorous content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers the Culinary Arts career pathway. Students gain technical skill proficiency through competency-based applied learning that contributes to the academic knowledge, higher-order reasoning and problem-solving skills, work attitudes, general employability skills, technical skills, and occupation-specific skills, and knowledge of all aspects of the culinary careers. While classroom experience is necessary to learn the foundational culinary and management skills, nothing beats real-life experience gained by working in the industry. ProStart students learn how to be an industry professional through hands-on work under the direction of a mentor. Mentors help students make the connection between their present performance and their future career. Students completing this career pathway may earn the ServSafe® certification as well as the National ProStart Certificate of Achievement.
